Chord Progression Generator
Stuck for chords? Pick a key and a mood and the generator writes a progression that actually works — built from how chords naturally pull towards each other. Lock the chords you like and re-roll the rest, hear it, then send it to the Looper to write a song over it.
Tip: press Space to generate again. Tap a chord to hear it; tap 🔓 to keep it when you re-roll.
How the generator works
Chords in a key have jobs: the tonic (I or i) feels like home, pre-dominant chords (IV, ii) move away, and the dominant (V) creates tension that wants to resolve home. The generator walks between these with weighted choices — the same moves you hear in real songs — and only keeps progressions that loop back smoothly. Each mood changes which chords it may use and how they are coloured (sevenths, add9s, borrowed ♭VII and ♭VI chords).
Turning a progression into a song
- Loop it in the Looper and pick a strum or picking pattern (or learn one from the strumming patterns).
- Hum melodies over it; use notes from the key's scale (try Analyse).
- Make a chorus by re-rolling with one or two chords locked, so the sections feel related.
Questions
Can I use generated chord progressions in my songs?
Yes. Chord progressions are building blocks of music and are free for anyone to use.
What makes a chord progression sound good?
Movement between home (I), away (IV, ii) and tension (V) chords, plus smooth voice leading. The generator follows those tendencies so the results sound natural.
